Review

RockyMounts Monorail 2 has numerous positive reviews because it has user-friendly features that are durable and reliable. We will explore those features below.

Overall Performance

Rockymounts Monorail 2 Review: Secure Your Bikes During Long Trips (Spring 2023)
RockyMounts Monorail 2 is a secure fit for all types of bikes and most car models

RockyMounts Monorail 2 is cost-effective and it performs as expected. It is available in two hitch sizes and you can buy add-ons to extend the bike carrying capacity as well as to support larger bikes. It is easy to install, has decent locking mechanism, anti-wobble function and components that are easily accessible. The rack is also foldable and covered by a lifetime warranty.

Mount

RockyMounts Monorail 2 is versatile because it accommodates all styles of bikes. It attaches to the vehicle via a hitch hole and is secured by a bolt that locks on the opposite side.

The mount features a rear wheel strap and a load arm attachment that is positioned over the front wheel. This helps to eliminate frame contact.

When not in use, you can fold the mount upright or away from the vehicle to ease rear access to the vehicle. It comes with a cable lock with a metal ring on one end and a loop on the other end. The sturdy metal ring fits under the cylinder of the main pivot of the mount. There is also a lock pod to secure the mount once installed in a vehicle. The distance from the hitch pin is 32 inches when the mount is folded down and 19 inches when it is folded up.

Design and functionality

RockyMounts Monorail 2 can hold mountain, gravel and road bikes with any type of tires

RockyMounts Monorail 2 has two contact points that make it quick to load your bike. Large wheel cups support the front wheel of your bike and a clamping arm is positioned against the fork arch by folding upwards. The rear wheel is secured by a heavy duty belt folding over the rim.

The mount tilts to 45 degrees to allow you rear access to the vehicle and you can reduce its length by folding it vertically when not in use. You fold it by pulling the lever that is used to drop down the rack. Several owners are impressed by the convenient position of the lever that tilts the rack.

The included cable lock is long enough to go around two bikes when you attach it to the hitch arm bolt.

The front wheel tray that flips up secures the front wheel, reduces the size of the mount when folded, and allows you to fit various styles of bikes, including fat bikes. Buyers also receive the rear wheel strap extender for fat bikes.

Weight capacity

RockyMounts Monorail 2 has two hitch size variants; 1.25 inches and 2 inches to accommodate two bikes. The latter version can also carry three bikes with single bike add-on tray bought separately.

The rack accommodates bikes with wheel sizes of 20 to 29 inches and fat bikes with maximum tire width of 5 inches. It supports maximum weight capacity of 60 pounds per bike for a 2-bike mount and maximum weight of 40 pounds per bike for a 3-bike rack of the 2-inch receiver hitch with the add-on tray.

RockyMounts Monorail 2 is ideal for electric and fat bikes. Instead of using the add-on tray to increase the carrying capacity, you could buy an adapter sleeve separately to fit 1.25 inch and 2 inch receiver hitches.

Durability and warranty

RockyMounts Monorail 2 requires little maintenance from time to time and thorough cleaning to serve you for years

RockyMounts Monorail 2 is sturdy and durable. It features a locking cable made of heavy-duty material, a lower frame crafted from custom extruded carbon steel and powder coated and e-coated to optimize weather resistance. The clamping arm is powder coated and made of extruded alloy and the wheel cups are fortified with engineered nylon.

The bike rack comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Vehicle compatibility

The rack fits hitch sizes of 1.25 and 2 inches, wheel size of 20 to 29 inches, wheelbases of 36 to 50 inches and tire width of up to 5 inches. It supports a wide variety of vehicles, although some cargo vans may require a hitch extension.

Adjustable hooks

You can adjust the tray side to side.

Assembly

After attaching RockyMounts Monorail 2 hitch rack comes partially assembled

Assembling RockyMounts Monorail 2 takes only a few minutes.

You secure the hitch to the receiver with a bolt and the provided key lock. Ensure that the front wheel clamp is very close to the fork to secure the bike properly.

The bike mount includes an anti-wobble hitch pin and locking cable, and two locks for the cable and the hitch pin. The rack secures your bike without frame contact that could rub off the paint if there is vibration.

PROS CONS
  • Supports all styles of bikes
  • Available in two hitch sizes
  • Easy to install
  • No frame contact
  • Foldable to a compact size
  • The trays only adjust side to side
  • Locks are plastic
