Review

As we mentioned above, the Ibera IB-RA5 is designed for road and cyclocross bikes, and this is evident in the features, i.e., the construction, design, weight capacity, and a few other features. We look at these rack features below to determine how well they’re suited to the job. Notably, this can give you some insight regarding how the rack stacks up to the competition. Spoiler alert, the Ibera PakRak Touring Carrier Plus+ is a very impressive bike accessory.

Design and functionality

Ibera PakRak Touring Bike Carrier Plus+ Review: The Best Bike Rack Ever? (Spring 2023)
The Ibera rack is attached directly to the bike’s frame and comes with adjustable bottom rods

First, there’s the rack’s design which incorporates multiple components to make it work as well as it does. The rack stays, for instance, are placed wide enough to slot right onto the frame of most road bikes without much fuss. Also, the rack attaching directly to the bike’s frame allows it to hold heavier loads.

Next, these racks come with adjustable bottom rods/mounting legs that you can extend or retract at will as long as you have appropriately sized Allen keys. After all, the bolts do need to be tightened for security.

You get 9” long extended seatpost rods that are also adjustable, although, unlike the bottom rods, they do not extend. They do, however, have a 30° swivel range so they can match the adjustability of the bottom rods. Again you’ll need to loosen the provided bolts for the Seatpost rods before you make any adjustments.

As for the rack platform, it incorporates a quick clip-on bag mount. As such, compatible bags like the PakRak Shopping Bag IB-BA15, attaching to the rack easily.

There’s a full suite of other Ibera bags that are compatible with the rack as well. That said, it accepts even off-brand strap-attachable bags and panniers without much fuss, although the process for attaching them may be slightly more complicated.

Of course, the quick clip-on bag mount also doubles as a quick release option; hence detaching your bags will be just as easy. Lastly, while it doesn’t come with a reflector or tail light, the rack does provide a spot at the back for you to attach one.

Weight capacity

Ibera PakRak Touring Bike Carrier Plus+ Review: The Best Bike Rack Ever? (Spring 2023)
This rack is extremely durable with a weight capacity of 55 lbs

Notably, the rack can handle up to 55lbs of luggage, which is made possible by the frame mounting and the welding processes used, and we’ll add more details on that below.

Bike compatibility

As for bike compatibility, this rack only works for disc brake bicycles. As such, if you have a rim brake alternative, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Additionally, we did mention that it’s adjustable, making it usable with 26”-29”/700c frames.

It might not seem like this supports a wide range of options, but since all road and cyclocross bicycles are made with 700c/29” wheels, it’s likely compatible with your bike. However, confirming that before purchase is always a good idea.

Durability

The rack is made using anodized aluminum, and according to the Aluminum Anodizers Council Trusted Source What is Anodizing? Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish. www.anodizing.org anodizing makes the metal’s surface corrosion-resistant and durable. Additionally, even the base metal itself is durable enough to be used in bike frames and thus should be an excellent option for the rack.

The rack’s components are also TIG welded together. According to the Universal Technical Institute Trusted Source How to Weld Aluminum: The Beginner’s Guide Aluminum welding isn’t easy, but it helps having a place to start. Read our beginner’s guide to learn about the basics of TIG and MIG welding. www.uti.edu , this same welding process is used by welders for professional racing teams when dealing with aluminum. This should boost your confidence concerning the durability of the rack.

Lastly, the weight capacity is rated at 55 lbs, which should give a little more insight into how well this bike accessory is constructed. After all, most of the competition maxes out at about 50lbs.

Accessories

As for the accessories, there are none provided with the initial purchase. However, as we mentioned above, it’s compatible with a full suite of Ibera panniers and trunk bags and works with a myriad of off-brand options as well. There’s even a spot for attaching your taillight or reflector.

Warranty

With only a 1-year guarantee, the warranty for the Ibera IB-RA5 is nothing special. However, there are other positives that can make the purchase worthwhile as shown above.

Other features

Ibera PakRak Touring Bike Carrier Plus+ Review: The Best Bike Rack Ever? (Spring 2023)
Thanks to the quick clip-on/release bag mounting system attaching and detaching your bags will be as easy as pie.

The only extra features included are the ones we touched on in the design, including the quick clip-on/release bag mounting system, extendable bottom rods, and the ability to work with different frame sizes. For the money, these are the features we expected and more.

Installation

Assembling and installing the Ibera PakRak Touring Carrier Plus+ is pretty straightforward, although you’ll need an 8mm open-end wrench and a 4mm Allen key. Everything else is provided, including 6 round head bolts, 4 flathead bolts, 4 nuts, 4 washers, the mounting arms, and lastly, the mounting legs. Everything else comes pre-assembled. Even a non-DIYer could do it by following the instructions in the manual.

FAQ

  1. How much weight should a rear bike rack hold?

Typically, rear bike racks have a capacity ranging between 20 and 50 lbs. However, there are heavier duty options that can carry up to 80 lbs. As for the Ibera PakRak Touring Carrier Plus+, the maximum capacity is 55 lbs.

  1. What do you put on a rear bike rack?

The rear bike rack is just like the trunk of your car, where you place necessities for your biking trip. This might be especially necessary if you’re doing something similar to a cyclocross trip where you travel long distances with your bike.

Of course, bicycle panniers and trunk bags may help since they help you organize your supplies like you would in any other travel bag. There are even some specially-designed shopping bags designed to work with your rack, and you can use them for things like grocery runs.

  1. Can you sit on a rear bike rack?

As you’ve seen from the weight limit mentioned above, sitting on a bike rack is not recommended, especially if you’re an adult. Most aren’t durable enough to handle your weight, and you’ll only damage them and your bike in the process. However, it’s possible for some children to sit on them if they’re light enough.

Conclusion

As far as rear bike rack options go, this is a stellar option, as shown by the Ibera bike rack review above. For the functionality and durability provided, it’s also well-priced.
